Of course, if you are new to the world of blogging and publishing, you may not know where to start to monetize your ads. In this article, we will walk you through the steps of setting up a Google AdSense account and the mistakes you should avoid.
Not Everyone Gets AdSense Approval
One thing new publishers don't realize is that just because you apply for a Google Adsense account doesn't mean you're automatically signed in. Google's policies are intentionally vague, which gives them elbow room to reject and accept whoever they want.
Of course, it's not too confusing why so many people's applications are rejected. People applying for an account may override considerations such as privacy policies, contact pages, and having a substandard website.
It goes without saying that Google has high standards when it comes to the quality of its ad network. Hence, they have very strict requirements, rules and regulations that publishers have to follow.
So, before you sign up for Google AdSense, make sure you meet all of the following requirements:
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have an active Gmail account that hasn't been linked to an AdSense account.
- You have a live website that meets all of Google's terms of service.
- Your website is at least three (3) months old.
- The content on your website is up-to-date and relevant — you must have at least 30 articles published that provide value to your visitors and must also have a contact page and a privacy page.
- You have sufficient website traffic (no minimum required here, but the more the better).
In essence, you should have already built a decent web presence in the eyes of Google. If your content is spammy and falls short of search engine optimization (SEO) best practices, Google will not recognize your content or website as relevant or authoritative, and may reject your account.
How to Sign Up for a Google AdSense Account
The process of applying for a Google Adsense account is actually quite simple, as long as you meet the requirements above and you have created a Google account that includes a Gmail address.
Well, here are the steps to apply for a Google Adsense account:
1. Apply to Program
The first step is to fill out the Google AdSense online application. The first page of the application requires you to fill in your website URL, your email address, and you choose whether you want to receive Google emails or not.
These emails are basically performance tips and suggestions tailored to help you along your AdSense journey. If you choose not to receive this email, it won't affect Google's decision (but certainly can't hurt).
2. Provide Requested Information
After you've filled in your basic information, Google will direct you to the next section of your app, which will look a little different — especially since Google changes its layout frequently.
However, the requested information remains the same, so be prepared with the following information:
- Your business name or your individual account name is below
- Your contact name
- Your physical mailing address
- Your email address (from your Gmail account)
- Your phone number
After you fill in this information, Google will verify your phone number. It will also send a PIN number to your physical mailing address to confirm that your address is correct - so make sure everything is entered correctly.
Everything may seem very simple, but if you don't verify this information after getting approval, you will lose the account approval. So pay attention.
3. Use Your Temporary Consent to Your Advantage
Google AdSense will give you provisional approval within 24 to 48 hours of filling out your application. Of course, if you're ready with a valuable and creative website that hasn't been involved with Google AdSense in the past, then it shouldn't take long to get official approval.
Within two days of filling out your application, you will receive a notice of provisional approval until you follow the other verification steps.
With temporary approval, you will receive a code that will allow you to immediately start placing ads on your website and see the click-through rate and revenue coming in. Google does this on purpose to ensure that you don't click on your own ads or invite suspicious traffic to your site to make it look like you have the traffic that AdSense deserves.
It is very important that once you post an ad, you leave it alone. That means there's no need to mess with ad placements, code, or spammy methods to drive suspicious traffic otherwise Google will reject your app.
4. Verify Your Account
Account verification is more of an informal step as you can spend some time with it, but it still needs to be done as soon as possible.
To verify your AdSense account for official approval, you'll need to verify the PIN Google sent you, your bank account number, tax information, and your phone number. Your PIN will typically arrive within one (1) week to 10 days, and you will not be able to touch your new earnings unless you verify this information accurately.
Make Sure You Follow Google Guidelines
Lastly, you must continue to follow the Google Adsense Guidlines. You can use the AdSense code for multiple websites, but you'll only want to post ads on other websites if they meet the guidelines stated above.
Also, remember to never click on your own ads or ask others to click on yours — Google will know what you are doing and it will kill you. As long as you stick to the guidelines, you will have a long and fruitful relationship with Google Adsense.
